Programs

The GuySuCo Apprenticeship Scheme is recognised as the best in Guyana with the majority of graduates progressing into skilled and supervisory positions in the Industry. The apprentices are trained in the following areas:

Industrial Electrical Installation

Involves training in specialized electrical industrial installation in all types of electric motor installations and drives, domestic installation, domestic appliances, refrigeration and air-conditioning instrumentation and electronics through extensive practical exposure to electrical repair work.

Industrial Instrumentation

Apprentices selected for the Industrial Instrumentation programme complete the 2nd year Industrial Electrician course and join the factory for six months familiarization with process-related instruments. They return to GTC/PM in the 3rd Year to complete a six-month instrument course covering Instrument Technology, Science, Mathematics, Electronics with practical hands-on project work in instrumentation & electronics.

Automotive Skills

As with other disciplines, apprentices specialising in automotive mechanics or auto electrician disciplines training in vehicle mechanical and electrical systems in the second year. At the end of the 2nd year of training, apprentices sit the final national examinations and go on to estate field workshops for a further two years of training.

Apprentice ‘In-Plant’ Training

Apprentices of all disciplines who complete training at GTC/PM join a 2-year ‘In-Plant Training Scheme’ in factories and field workshops where they complete their apprenticeship. On completion, apprentices are offered substantive employment with a career path in supervision and management according to their compitence. Those with proven performance in workshop activities and academic ability may become eligible for sponsorship to a University or a Cadetship program.

Sugar Boiler Skills

This is a 3 years apprenticeship program consisting of 6 months of basic fitting followed by another 6 month Sugar Technology course covering the milling process, juice treatment, clarification, evaporation vacuum pan, sugar boiling and centrifugation. Apprentices are allowed one day per week to gain hands-on experience in all sections of an operating factory. After the first year of training, apprentices join their sponsor estate for two years of training in Vacuum Pan Boiling for the production of sugar crystals.
