Demerara Sugar Terminal
The Demerara Sugar Terminal (DST) is located at Ruimveldt in Georgetown. Since opening in 1960 this facility provides the largest bulk storage and river transport system for the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc.
Facility
The Demerara Sugar Terminal consists of two 20,000 tonnes sugar stores, river and road intake facilities and an ocean loading jetty all joined by a conveyor system.
This specially designed facility, stores and exports bulk sugar in good order and condition, produced by the Corporation. Bulk sugar is transported from GuySuCo’s operating estates via road or river to the terminal.
The Storage areas are constructed on two semi-buoyant rafts of pre-stressed concrete, each carrying six monoliths to accommodate the immense size of the building. Loaded from a steel band conveyor, Sugar is drawn through the 16 hoppers set in the floor and falls by gravity onto a rubber belt conveyor for final storage.
