Our History
The GuySuCo Training Centre-Port Mourant (GTC-PM) was founded in 1957 by Booker Sugar Estates as the premier technical and vocational school in Guyana and the Caribbean. Ever since attendance have been overwhelming and to date over 3,400 young people have been trained through the school’s apprenticeship scheme.
The apprenticeship scheme is recognized as the most successful in Guyana, with the majority of graduates progressing into skilled and supervisory positions in GuySuCo after a period of consolidation in their jobs on completion of their apprenticeship. GTC/PM offers the most comprehensive training curriculum that is not only beneficial for apprentices in specialized fields, but those with technical skills. This simple but prestigious institution has moulded craftsmen and craftswomen, engineers, managers and entrepreneurs of a high calibre who continue to contribute significantly to the economy of Guyana, the Caribbean, and further afield.
The Guysuco Training Centre continues to enjoy a very high success rate at the Guyana Technical Education Examination, with records showing a 100% pass rate at these exams.
Our Facility
The training centre is equipped with lecture and residential facilities as well as a practical workshop. The facility is also fully staffed with instructors who have studied at the University of Guyana and other higher education institutions. The workshop staff comprise seventeen (17) members while the hostel staff comprise eleven (11) persons respectively, led by the General Manager.
While the primary objective is for young persons attending the Training Centre to gain competency in technical skills, a holistic development in sports, culture, social interaction, and the value of self-discipline is also integral in the apprenticeship program.
Our Apprenticeship Program
The apprenticeship period covers four years of Training. The first and second years are spent at the Training Centre gaining competency in performing industrial-oriented practical work and tasks complemented with a thorough understanding of related theory. The first-year training also entails a basic engineering course designed to give apprentices a sound foundation and standards of performance in common core tasks required for them to advance into their specialization period of training.
The second year allows students to specialize in fitting and machining. This entails working with manufacturing parts and the maintenance of engineering plants such as milling plant, boilers, process plant, turbines, types of pumps, reduction drives, conveyors, rotary Filter, Valves, Stationary Diesel Engines and other types of industrial equipment in the Sugar Industry. The skills acquired while working on industrial-related projects ensure that on completion of the 2nd year of training apprentices will fit into an industrial environment with confidence for their 3rd and 4th year of industrial training.
The third and fourth years are spent working with a wide range of specialized industrial equipment and plants installed in the factories.
